FreeSurfer Version 7 Release

This page describes the version 7.X.X releases of FreeSurfer. Below are the install packages and tar archives for download and install.

We recommend using the *.rpm packages to install freesurfer on CentOS/RedHat linux, the *.deb package for Ubuntu and and the *.pkg installer for MacOS. The install packages check system dependencies at installation time and update the system with any needed packages. If you do not have root/sudo/admin privileges on the machine you want to install freesurfer on, then use the tar archives instead. Please however do not expand any tar archive such that the path to FREESURFER_HOME is /usr/local/freesurfer on linux or /Applications/freesurfer on MacOS. These paths are overwritten by the installer packages so manual installs there may not be preserved.

Important Note: When processing a group of subjects for your study, it is essential to process all your subjects with the same version of FreeSurfer, on the same OS platform and vendor, and for safety, even the same version of the OS. While we continue to work to ensure that results match across platforms, there are none-the-less system-level libraries that are OS dependent. An exception to this rule is that you may view and edit files across any platform or version, and run some post-processing tools (outside the recon-all stream) if you check with us first (for instance you may run the longitudinal processing with newer versions).
