FreeSurfer Version 8 & 7 Releases
This page describes the version 8.X and 7.X releases of FreeSurfer. Below are the install packages and tar archives for download and install.
The *.rpm (CentOS/RedHat) and *.deb (Ubuntu) package installers should be used by system administrators to install freesurfer for use by multiple users on institutional and/or public linux servers in your organization. The installers have not been tested on systems other than the version of the linux OS they are named after. The tar archives are available for (individual) users who may not have system administrator privileges to test/try out freesurfer on a (private) machine. Since use of the tar archives neither manage or check system installation dependencies, we cannot be responsible for run time errors or system dependency issues that may result from use of the tar archives instead of the package installers. Please do not expand any tar archive such that the path to FREESURFER_HOME is /usr/local/freesurfer on linux or /Applications/freesurfer on MacOS. Those paths are overwritten by the installer packages so manual installs there may not be preserved.

While we continue to work to ensure that results match across platforms, there are none-the-less system-level libraries that are OS dependent. An exception to this rule is that you may view and edit files across any platform or version, and run some post-processing tools (outside the recon-all stream) if you check with us first (for instance you may run the longitudinal processing with newer versions).
